This is the first time I’ve come across the work of Senga Nengudi, in a show that’s just closed at the White Cube, Bermondsey. One piece in particular grabbed my attention: R.S.V.P. Reverie “B/W”, 2014 (shown). What I saw:

Tights, absent of body
But their form suggesting legs, limbs, joints, feet
Cream, tan, brown, black
Stretched, strung-out, strung-up, distorted, interrupted, multiplied
Embellished, drawn in, tied, knotted
Pinned – fixed – against the gallery wall
But breeze moved
My shadow interrupts
Sand, skirting the base of the gallery walls
And weighting joints that touch the gallery floor (just)

Nengudi’s work offers free-form, abstract, biomorphic ‘soft’ sculptures that incorporate a range of found and natural materials.
